Već sam više puta pominjala koliko me privlače karirani materijali. Zar nije i naš život takav? Omeđeni smo sa obe strane nepomerivim pravilima rođenja i smrti, a zatim i karakterom, polom, vaspitanjem, poreklom i sličnim stvarima. No, između tih određenosti imamo slobodu za delovanje kakvo god mi želimo. Sami biramo boje i njihova značenja, sami pomeramo linije koliko možemo.

EN: Whenever I notice that something from the outside world attracts my attention and evokes emotions I try to analyze why is that and what it says about me. The same is when it comes to fashion, fabrics, patterns and prints. Our conscious or unconscious selection of certain items as beautiful from the whole bunch of information around us is the result of our taste, preferences and attitudes. I believe that we should become aware of our taste, so that we can learn something about yourself, and then, that we could develop it.

I’ve already mentioned a few times how much I like plaid fabrics. Their main feature is the structure – there is no plaid pattern without clearly defined scheme of lines that are symmetrically repeated. However, within that clearly structured rules there is so much open space to play with a combinations of colors and line density. The whole world of freedom is revealed underneath something so definite. Isn’t our life like that, too? We are bounded on the both sides by inviolably rules of birth and death, and then our character, gender, education, origin and similar. But between these determinations we have all the freedom of action of whatever kind we want. We choose our own colors and their meanings, we push the lines as much as we can. That freedom within the lack of the freedom is a paradox, but, being like that, it exists. Thus plaid pattern is revealed to me as an abstract image of human life and its opportunities and it attracts me because of that general, deeper meaning.

This skirt I designed and sewed reflects a creative and expressive nature. Although it is a knee-length it is not strict because of its three slits that can make it attractive. I often wear it with sneakers and sweatshirt, but my friend wore it for shooting  over jeans and with some leather details for a striking street style look. The skirt looks a bit , for a change, as a creative variation of the famous plaid shirt tied around the waist, which was interesting when we saw it the first five times, but not the next million and five. Analyzing and building our taste would prevent such senseless repeating of clichés. Do you have the habit of analyzing why you like some clothing items or their elements?

  1. Draga Helen of Troy,
Thanks for the thought-provoking blog post :)
